Norse gods and Greek gods
Mar. 27th, 2011 07:43 pmI've been into mythology for a long time and recently i've spent some time reading books that incorporate or involve in some way the old gods. There was Terra Lynn Childs' Goddess series and Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series, and Gods Behaving Badly - all left me wanting. There's also Neil Gaiman's Amercian Gods (which I'm yet to finish) and Greg van Eekhout, Nancy Farmer, Joanne Harris (Runemarks). But what has been keeping me interested is the new New Zelaland's tv series 'The Almighty Johnsons' about the reincarnated Norse gods. It's pretty good, the actors are not hollywood pretty but they are fine and the acting is really good. I like the plots and hope to see more of it. I really really hope it gets to run its course.
Here's the trailer:
(I'm still hoping to find something about the Slavic gods or folklore though...)

Books read in 2010
Jan. 1st, 2011 01:58 pm So according to goodreads I've read 50 books this year. Not bad. There were some stinky ones and there were some nice surprises. Over all I seem to have got lost in the fantasy, urban fantasy , and young adult genre.

I've been browsing various fanfiction archives for the more obscure fandoms and it got me thinking about old tv shows. I used to follow 'Sea Quest DSV' pretty religiously ;). Loved 'Earth 2' as well. I barely remember what they were about though.
More recently I stopped watching House, Grey's Anatomy, NCIS and CSI (the las vegas version). Not much left on my radar anymore. 'Pretty Little Liars' turned out to be pretty fun, 'Detroit 1-8-7', as well, but in a different way, obviously. But there's nothing that I like right now that compared to how much into 'Stargate SG-1' and 'SGA' I used to be. :( Couldn't get into 'Caprica', after rather liking 'BSG'. Am sort of meh on 'True Blood', but will catch up on it. Had to stop watching 'Fringe' for awhile after the grusomness of some of the scenes got too much but will definitely get back to watching it. I do love all the characters on that show which is rare for me. 'Covert Affairs' isn't so bad but it's not that engaging either. I'm hoping the new season will bring some interesting shows. I might give 'Merlin' another try and get back to 'Criminal Minds'... And then there's 'Lost Girl' which is cheesy and a little cheap but fun :).

Fanfiction recs list
Sep. 10th, 2010 03:37 amFanfiction recommendations post.
I'd like to keep a list here of the fanfiction that I find particularly good, or particularly interesting/ original premise/never before seen twist, or just something that reads so well that despite cliches and some other problems I just can't stop reading. So...
Categories: Naruto, Harry Potter, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, BtVS Crossovers, Inuyasha, and some others. The list will be multi fandom (since I tend to like crossovers and couldn't really split the fandoms). It'll go like this:
Fandom/
Title/author/type of story (AU/time travel/crossover/real family /what have you) / pairings/ warnings - if I remember any. Author summary. And occasionaly some rating/short descritpion from me. I'll mention fic types if relevant, for instance there are a lot of 'real family' fics in crossovers (as in 'turns out Buffy is really Scott Summers' cousin/sister etc), peggy sues - going back into ones timeline to fix things, self inserts, fix fics etc.
Will be edited later to add more.

Books - urban fantasy - faeries
Sep. 2nd, 2010 03:35 amOne of the recent subgenres in urban fantasy is the faery centered one.
I've checked out some of the books dealing with the fae. My two cents:
The Iron King by Julie Kagawa. Book 1 in the Iron Fey series. I gave it 4/5. Good strong heroine, interesting characters and engaging world.

Books - historicals
Sep. 1st, 2010 03:34 amHistorical fiction, Ive been looking for some good books in that genre but there seems to be a tonne about Tudors and a bit about Plantagenets, some 19th century books and that's pretty much it. Ah, and occasional ancient history book - Rome mostly and some Egypt. Where's something about Russia, Scandinavia, Poland-Lithuania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Bohemia? What about outside Europe? Or Europe pre Christianity but not Rome itself? Hopefully after the current trend about Tudors dies out we'll get some new stuff from a different period.
Icons - Mercy Thompson
Sep. 1st, 2010 03:33 amThis set is mainly from the 'Homecoming' comic book. It's a prequel to the urban fantasy book series by Patricia Briggs that starts with 'Moon Called'. The series is called Mercedes (or Mercy) Thompson from the name of it's protagonist. Who is an awesome heroine, by the way. She's tough but not unrealistically so. She is physically weaker than most characters she interacts with but she's smart and knows when to ask for help. She's part Native American and a walker (coyote shapeshifter, basicaly). The plots are interesting and there's suspense in every book (there are 5 so far), the heroine makes mistakes and has to pay the price, and the almost obligatory in this genre love triangle isn't painful to read and gets resolved well enough and fairly soon. So I definitely recommend the books. Awesome werewolves that actually are thought out (the good and the bad of actually changing into an animal), vampires of the scary type, witches and fae.
As for comics, there's the prequel and the word is out there's more planned - the first book is being adapted to comics.
[1] Mercy as depicted on the Homecoming cover
[2] Mercy from Moon Called comic cover (with Adam in wolf form)
[1] Anna and Charles (the wolf) from the Alpha and Omega book covers (Cry Wolf and Hunting Ground)
[8] Mercy from Homecoming comic
